Tambor del Llano, Grazalema: The Mountain Retreat to Book Around the Jerez Horse Festival

Written by Jawad Amin | Mar 25, 2026 11:08:29 AM

The poet Federico García Lorca once described the sound of a horse's hooves galloping across an open plain as the beating of a drum — tambor del llano, the drum of the plain. An organic estate in the heart of the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park took that line as its name, and everything about the place lives up to it.

Tambor del Llano sits four kilometres from the village of Grazalema and twenty kilometres from Ronda, inside Spain's first designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve — a landscape of limestone peaks, ancient cork oak forests, river valleys and open pasture that shifts with every season.

It is a family-run working farm and rural hotel, rated 4.9 out of 5 across 488 Google reviews, and it sits approximately one hour and fifteen minutes from Jerez by car.

If you are visiting Jerez for the Feria del Caballo, this is the retreat that makes the rest of the week make sense.

About Tambor del Llano

Tambor del Llano is a 32-hectare organic estate that happens to have ten rooms, a restaurant serving food largely grown on the property, stables with qualified guides, hiking trails starting from the door, and the kind of quiet that is increasingly rare to find anywhere in southern Europe.

The estate combines accommodation with an ecological farm committed to genuine sustainability, solar and aerothermal energy, km0 produce, organic native breed lamb, dark sky-friendly lighting, and holistic regenerative land management. It is a place built by people who care deeply about where they live and want to share it carefully.

What You Will Experience

Horse Riding

The riding here is the centrepiece of any stay. Rides run from one hour to six hours, guided by qualified equestrian tourism monitors with deep knowledge of the Sierra de Grazalema terrain.

Routes move through river valleys, mountain passes, cork oak forests and open countryside — terrain that shifts dramatically with altitude and rewards every level of rider differently.

For beginners
, two-day introductory programmes combine lessons in the arena with guided trail riding.

For experienced riders, longer routes cover ground that very few tourists ever reach.

Multi-day programmes with half or full board are available for those who want to spend several days building up through the landscape progressively.

Main Featured Horse Riding Prices
:

  • Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park (2 Hours) – €58
  • Horseback Riding “Arroyo de las Adelfas” (3 Hours) – €82

  • Astronomy Nights Experience – €38
  • Full equestrian 2-night programme (3 days, 7 hours riding, half board, double room): from €540 for two people

The Food

Guests mention the food in almost every review. The kitchen works from the farm's own produce — organic lamb reared on the estate, vegetables from the garden, seasonal ingredients sourced locally. Breakfast is served from 8:30am. Dinner is available on request and is widely considered the highlight of the day.

"Stunning location, outstanding food — generous and traditional breakfast and a delicious dinner menu featuring local foods."

"We stayed for dinner each evening and were never disappointed. Of particular note was the leg of lamb, which was amazing both for its taste and for its size."

Beyond the Horses

The estate offers hiking routes directly from the door, yoga courses, bird watching, star gazing on clear Andalusian nights and therapeutic massages — popular after longer rides. Two of the three lounges have working fireplaces, which makes evenings in the cooler months particularly good.

How to Get There from Jerez

Tambor del Llano is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes from Jerez by car, heading northeast via Arcos de la Frontera and into the Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park along the A-372 towards Ronda. The final stretch narrows as the landscape rises — take it slowly, the road has character. A car is essential. There is no practical public transport connection.

  • From Jerez: A-382 east to Arcos de la Frontera, then A-372 towards Grazalema and Ronda
  • From Ronda: 20 km northwest on the A-372

When to Go

May — when the Feria del Caballo takes place — is one of the best months to visit the Sierra de Grazalema. The wildflowers are at their peak, the rivers are full, temperatures are comfortable for riding (typically 15–22°C) and the birdlife in the park is extraordinarily active. It is mid season at the estate, which means good availability if booked in advance and fair cancellation terms.

Spring and autumn are the ideal riding seasons. Summer is warm and busy. Winter is quiet, dramatic and — for those who do not mind the possibility of rain — deeply atmospheric.

Plan Your Trip

The Feria del Caballo runs 9–16 May 2026. Tambor del Llano works perfectly as a two or three-night stay either side of the fair — arriving a few days early to ride in the mountains before the week begins, or retreating here after the Feria closes to decompress in the silence of the Sierra.

FAQs

  • Do I need riding experience to visit Tambor del Llano? No. Rides are available for complete beginners through to advanced riders. The two-day introductory programme is specifically designed for those with little or no experience, combining arena lessons with guided trail riding at a pace that builds confidence gradually.

  • Can children ride? Yes. The estate welcomes families and the horses are well suited to younger riders. The guides adapt the experience to the group, so children ride alongside parents at a pace appropriate for everyone.

  • How far in advance should I book? For a May visit coinciding with the Feria del Caballo, book as early as possible. May is mid season and the estate fills up — particularly for the equestrian programme. Riding slots are separate from accommodation and have limited availability per day.

  • Is a car essential? Yes. There is no practical public transport connection to Tambor del Llano. A standard car handles the road comfortably at a steady pace — the final section is unsealed but manageable.

  • What should I wear for riding? Long trousers or jodhpurs, closed-toe shoes or riding boots, and a comfortable top. Helmets and any necessary equestrian equipment are provided by the estate. Bring a light layer — mountain mornings in Grazalema can be cool even in May.

  • Is it suitable for non-riders travelling with riders? Yes. Hiking routes, yoga, bird watching, star gazing and massage are all available as standalone activities. Non-riders are well catered for and the food and setting alone are worth the stay.

  • What is the food like? Ecological, seasonal and largely produced on the estate itself. Breakfast is served from 8:30am. Dinner is available on request and is consistently rated by guests as one of the highlights of the stay. The organic lamb from the estate's own herd is particularly well regarded.

  • Is Grazalema village worth visiting during the stay? Absolutely. The village is four kilometres from the estate and is one of the most beautiful white villages in Andalusia — narrow cobbled streets, a central square, local restaurants and craft shops. Ronda, one of the most dramatic hilltop cities in Spain, is twenty kilometres away and easily combined with a morning or afternoon during a two or three-night stay.
